So we left off with the deck frames done and ready to lay some deck boards. It made a bigger difference than I expected and I'm ecstatic with the results.
This is the tool we used to set the deck boards and its probably one of the coolest tools I've used. It's the Camo deck board system and it uses this tool to position and space the board. With a metal channel on each side you slide the screws in and screw them in. The bit has a stop on it so the depth is set as well. The screws go in at a 45 degree angle on the ends of the board and are almost invisible. No screws or nails on top to stub your toe on.
This is all the hole it makes.
Leaves a really clean look on the boards. Almost bummed that I won't use this tool again any time soon!
Once we got going the boards went down pretty quick.
The boards that ran horizontal to the house were the only ones that had to be cut. We somehow lucked out that the distance between the house and garage (driveway as well) was just a hair over 8' so an 8' deck board fit perfect.
Got a little obsessed with making some progress and worked late on the grill side wall. Used pre notched deck railing 4X4's. It made quick work of it.
Framed out the other side the next day. I had to adjust a couple of times but it came out really nice.
Once the deck boards went up it really finished the space on the grill side. I didn't really want Heidi (our Doberman) getting back in that part of the yard anymore. Downside I currently can't get the mower back there either... I plan to possibly mulch or do some planters back there but I'm not sure.
The firepit side was a bit more complicated. I wanted it to look like 4X4 beams of cedar on the wall instead of deck boards so we 45'd all the outside ends and the cap boards and glued and nailed the ends on. Really glad dad was there to help out. He's a bit more detail focused than I am.
Finished the front with a 12' 1X10 rough cut cedar fascia board. Plan to take the lowest deck board off the back and replace with another fascia board.
A couple chairs and a firepit make it useable! Need to make a couple benches, put the last fascia board, a couple trim pieces and seal the deck and its all finished up! Emily wants some string lights as well that should look nice and help out with some lighting for some late nights.
Not too shabby
